what was the black death

Answers

Answer 1

Answer:

The Black Death was a devastating global epidemic of bubonic plague that struck Europe and Asia in the mid-1300s. The plague arrived in Europe in October 1347, when 12 ships from the Black Sea docked at the Sicilian port of Messina. People gathered on the docks were met with a horrifying surprise: Most sailors aboard the ships were dead, and those still alive were gravely ill and covered in black boils that oozed blood and pus. Sicilian authorities hastily ordered the fleet of “death ships” out of the harbor, but it was too late: Over the next five years, the Black Death would kill more than 20 million people in Europe—almost one-third of the continent’s population. Even before the “death ships” pulled into port at Messina, many Europeans had heard rumors about a “Great Pestilence” that was carving a deadly path across the trade routes of the Near and Far East. Indeed, in the early 1340s, the disease had struck China, India, Persia, Syria and Egypt. The plague is thought to have originated in Asia over 2,000 years ago and was likely spread by trading ships, though recent research has indicated the pathogen responsible for the Black Death may have existed in Europe as early as 3000 B.C. The plague is thought to have originated in Asia over 2,000 years ago and was likely spread by trading ships, though recent research has indicated the pathogen responsible for the Black Death may have existed in Europe as early as 3000 B.C. Today, scientists understand that the Black Death, now known as the plague, is spread by a bacillus called Yersinia pestis. (The French biologist Alexandre Yersin discovered this germ at the end of the 19th century.)They know that the bacillus travels from person to person through the air, as well as through the bite of infected fleas and rats. Both of these pests could be found almost everywhere in medieval Europe, but they were particularly at home aboard ships of all kinds—which is how the deadly plague made its way through one European port city after another.

Which statement best describes the Louisiana Purchase?

1. President Jefferson decided to purchase the Louisiana Territory from France

2. President Jefferson only intended to buy New Orleans

3. President Jefferson traveled to France himself to negotiate the purchase

4. President Jefferson acted in accordance with the US Constitution in making the Louisiana Purchase

Answers

Answer: 1. President Jefferson decided to purchase the Louisiana Territory from France.

Explanation: In 1795, the United States signed the Pinckney's Treaty with Spain, allowing US ships to sail on the Mississippi and to New Orleans. However, in 1800, Spain had also made a secret agreement with France to transfer its land in the trans-Mississippi West, as well as giving control of the Mississippi River and New Orleans, to France.  This was bad news for the US because:

• the treaty with Spain would no longer protect American access to the Mississippi and New Orleans

• France's presence in North America could prevent US expansion to the west

President Thomas Jefferson, however, decided to use diplomacy instead of war to secure access to the Mississippi River.

→ In 1802, Jefferson sent James Monroe and Robert Livingston to France and authorized the men to offer to buy New Orleans and parts of Florida from France.

→ France’s foreign minister, Charles de Talleyrand, countered with a surprise exchange: France would sell all of the Louisiana Territory, including the Mississippi River, to the United States for $15 million.

(This was a much better deal they had expected, motivated by France's need for the money and inability to defend the Territory after losing a strategic base in 1791.)

→ Monroe and Livingston reached an agreement with the French on April 30, 1803, which modern historians call the Louisiana Purchase.

The following are the impacts of the Louisiana Purchase:

→ The country nearly doubled in size.

→ The US now controlled the Mississippi River and the port of New Orleans.

However, there were some legal problems surrounding the purchase:

→ Livingston and Monroe had gone beyond their authority in spending more for the larger smaller territory and been unable to notify Jefferson until two months after the deal was reached.  Communication wasn't fast then, so the news at most times wouldn't come until months after an event has happened.

→ The US Constitution did not directly state that a president had the power to purchase land.

• Despite not involving the Senate, Jefferson used Article II of the Constitution, which was that a president can make treaties with foreign countries if two-thirds of the Senate agree to justify the purchase.

The history of legal charters asserting certain rights for particular groups goes back to the Middle Ages and earlier. An example is the Magna Carta, an English legal charter agreed between the King and his barons in 1215. In the early modern period, there was renewed interest in the Magna Carta. English common law judge Sir Edward Coke revived the idea of rights based on citizenship by arguing that Englishmen had historically enjoyed such rights.

How did blacks get their freedom before the 13th amendment?.

Answers

Answer:

The 13th Amendment.

Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.

Explanation: The 13th amendment stated that the only time American citizens could be enslaved was for punishment for a crime. This law had a particularly adverse effect on African Americans, as they were often wrongfully criminalized and incarcerated at a much higher rate. So in essence, they often remained slaves when they were incarcerated. Before the Civil War slave codes were implemented in the south to restrict the movement of slaves. These laws (for example) stopped slaves from gathering together in groups at churches, from bearing arms and from reading and writing. The idea was to perpetuate and maintain the system of slavery. After the war was over southerners passed Black Codes, which were laws that greatly restricted the lives of free Blacks. After slaves were free, southerners were upset and tried to put Black people back into a position that was as close to slavery as possible. The Black Codes would eventually evolve into Jim Crow laws, which was a system of laws that criminalized Blackness and insured they would be incarcerated and lose their freedom for the most minor of offenses. The primary thing Jim Crow laws did was enforce a system of legal segregation all throughout the south for many years. Its legacy still has a great impact on the US today.

Explain why welfare state policies became contentious issues by the late 20th century

Answers

Answer:

The connections between the experiences of immigrants arriving in the late 19th and early 20th centuries with the larger issue of worldwide migration in the 21st century are the following.

Immigrants have always considered the United States a land of opportunities. Since the advent of the Industrial Revolution that changed the lives of many people, immigration was a constant factor in the history of the United States. Indeed, since colonial America times, immigrants were the ones who gave birth to this nation. The United States is a country formed by immigrants.

So in the 19th century, most of the immigrants arrived in the United States trying to improve their living conditions and a better future. Many of them left their native countries because they were escaping from poverty, political persecution, or religious persecution. That is why they made the decision to risk everything and travel to the US.

In the 20th century, the United States opened official immigration stations to receive the number of immigrants that tried to enter the country. One was at Ellis Island in Newe York; the other was at Angel Island in San Francisco, California. The middle of the 1900s was a time of massive migration for the same reasons.

And unfortunately, in the 21st century, immigrant waves, nos from Central America, leave their native countries due to the harsh economic conditions there. They risk their lives crossing Central America and México, trying to reach the American Dream.

The major differences between capitalism and socialism are established around the role of the government and equality of economics. Capitalism affords economic freedom, consumer choice, and economic growth. Socialism, which is an economy controlled by the central state, provides for a greater social welfare and decreases business fluctuations.

One of the bigger advantages to capitalism is consumer choice, which not only lets people decide what they want, but also leads to more competition among companies, which in turn leads to better products and service. Another point is that goods and services that are produced based on consumer choice create incentives to cut costs and avoid unnecessary waste.

Now, some of the disadvantages of capitalism is a chance of a monopoly of companies with monopoly power, which means they can abuse their power and charge higher prices than what was originally charged. Another disadvantage is inequality, if a capitalist society is based on the right to pass down wealth from generation to generation, and only a small group of people are holding onto the wealth, it continues to be passed down to the same small group of individuals. In turn, social inequality and social division take place.

A big advantage of socialism is that the citizens are equals and the wealth that is earned by employees is distributed equally among people. Not only that, but the government insures fairness in resources, utilization and distribution. Socialism also diminishes class distinctions, so there is no longer middle class, lower class, or higher class, and all of peoples basic needs are met in a socialist economy including but not limited to, shelter, education, and healthcare.

The disadvantages of socialism include, government inefficiencies, when the government owns all of the resources, workers can lack the motivation or incentives to work hard. When people are working for the state or a business they typically are trying to move higher up in the company, and earn more money by getting promoted. When there is no motivation for a greater reward, people can lose the incentive to work as hard as they once did. Another disadvantage is higher taxes, which may decelerate economic growth.

In conclusion, I believe that capitalism provides a greater benefit to society. Not only is consumer choice important but so is economic growth. Though there may be some downsides to capitalism, like monopolies. In my opinion, it benefits the people greatly and gives people freedom to choose.

Answers

It looks good change socialism to communism it sounds more perfessional i think

Overall, your paper covers the major differences between capitalism and socialism and presents some advantages and disadvantages of each economic system.

However, there are a few areas where you might want to consider making some improvements:

1. **Provide Clear Definitions:** In the opening paragraph, consider providing more precise definitions of capitalism and socialism. You mention "economy controlled by the central state" for socialism, which is one aspect of socialism but not the whole definition. Similarly, clarify what you mean by "economic freedom" in capitalism and how it relates to consumer choice and economic growth.

2. **Supporting Evidence:** To strengthen your arguments, consider incorporating more concrete examples or statistical data to support your points. For instance, you mention that capitalism leads to better products and services due to consumer choice, but including specific examples of successful competition driving innovation would make your point more convincing.

3. **Address Counterarguments:** To make your paper more well-rounded, acknowledge and address potential counterarguments. For example, in your section on socialism, you mention that the government ensures fairness in resource distribution. However, some critics argue that central planning can lead to inefficiencies and misallocation of resources, so it's essential to acknowledge such perspectives.

4. **Elaborate on Socialism Advantages:** In the section discussing the advantages of socialism, you focus on equality and meeting basic needs. While these are important points, consider expanding on other potential advantages, such as collective decision-making, reduced income inequality, and the potential for a more stable economy.

5. **Neutral Tone:** It's important to maintain a neutral tone in academic writing. Avoid phrases like "I believe" and "in my opinion." Instead, state the arguments objectively, and let the evidence and analysis speak for themselves.

6. **Conclusion:** In the conclusion, briefly summarize the main points discussed in the paper without introducing new information. Avoid using phrases like "I believe" and focus on reiterating the key points you made.

Remember to cite your sources if you used any references in your paper and proofread carefully for grammar and clarity. Overall, your paper is a good starting point, and with some improvements and further elaboration, it can become even stronger.
